A Toronto man faces numerous charges after a suspect involved in two collisions fled from police and attempted a carjacking with a firearm last week in Vaughan.
A suspect in a white BMW SUV rammed a cruiser and fled when officers had pulled up alongside the "suspicious vehicle" idling in a parking lot at 4001 Steeles Ave. on July 5 at about 10:20 p.m.,York Regional Police said in a news release.
After the fleeing vehicle was involved in a collision on Jane Street at Hullmar Drive, a suspect left the BMW and ran to a parking lot on Jane, where he entered the back seat of an idling vehicle and pointed a handgun at the driver, attempting to steal the car, police said.
Officers located the suspect and he was taken into custody. The suspect was taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a serious injury, police added.
The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) was notified, have invoked their mandate, and are currently investigating.
No one else was seriously injured, police said.
A loaded handgun was seized from the suspect, as well as ammunition, Canadian currency and a quantity of suspected cocaine and fentanyl from the BMW SUV, police said.
At the time of this incident, the accused was on two separate firearm prohibitions and was wanted on a warrant for previous offences.
Akwasi Edusei, 23, of Toronto is charged with: dangerous operation; flight from police; fail to remain (x2); robbery with a firearm; possession for the purpose of trafficking (x2); and additional firearms-related charges.
