Fire, police respond to smoky smell on Main Street Newmarket

The situation was quickly resolved as no flames were found by firefighters, police say

Lanes were temporarily closed on Main Street Newmarket this morning after a smell of smoke was reported.

Central York Fire Services and York Regional Police were called to Stiver Vale at 195 Main St. before noon today, Jan. 6, after a person reported seeing or smelling smoke, York Regional Police Const. Laura Nicolle said.

At least two fire trucks and a number of firefighters responded. They cleared the building and didn't find any flames.

Police also responded to manage traffic on the scene as Central York Fire Services takes the lead on incidents like this where there is no suspicious activity.

Nicolle said the situation has since been resolved and lanes have reopened.
