East Gwillimbury residents arrested, $22K in stolen goods recovered

Investigation began when police were notified of multiple thefts by the same female suspect at a Newmarket pharmacy

Six East Gwillimbury residents and a Richmond Hill woman have been arrested after $22,000 in goods stolen from retail outlets were recovered at an East Gwillimbury house.

The investigation began on Feb. 16, 2024 after police were notified of multiple thefts by the same female suspect at a pharmacy at Yonge Street and Mulock Drive in Newmarket, according to a York Regional Police news release.

On Jan. 15, Feb. 14 and Feb. 16, the suspect entered the store and stole numerous personal hygiene and cosmetic products, police said.

On Thursday, April 4, investigators executed a Criminal Code search warrant at a residence in East Gwillimbury, where a large amount of property believed to be stolen from other retail locations was located.

Seven occupants found inside were charged, police said.

At the time of the arrest, Alin-ionut Banu, 39, of East Gwillimbury was being sought by the Barrie Police Service in connection to thefts that occurred in its jurisdiction.

  • Simona-Maria Gheorghe, 51, of Richmond Hill

Charges include: theft under $5,000 (Adriana Banu and Simona-Maria Gheorghe only) and possession of property obtained by crime.
