Driver, vehicle located in Highway 400 hit-and-run fatality

'No charges have been laid as of yet. Not saying there will be any, (but) we are still investigating and trying to assess what happened,' says OPP sergeant

A male driver from the Greater Toronto Area is talking with provincial police after a 27-year-old Barrie man was found dead alongside Highway 400 near the Dunlop Street bridge early Friday morning.

Earlier in the day, provincial police said there was trauma to the victim's body and they believed he had been struck by a vehicle. The body was discovered by an off-duty police  officer around 4 a.m.

Through the investigation, Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the driver and vehicle were located “somewhere in Brampton.”

“No charges have been laid as of yet. Not saying there will be any, (but) we are still investigating and trying to assess what happened,” Schmidt said Friday evening.

Highway 400 southbound was closed through most of the city until 11 a.m., from Bayfield Street to Essa Road, as OPP officers investigated at the scene.

Police say the deceased has been identified and his family has been notified. The victim's name has not been released.

The on-scene investigation was focused on the side of the highway, just south of the Dunlop Street overpass. As many as eight OPP vehicles were parked alongside the road as officers searched for clues in the lanes beside the southbound on-ramp this morning, including vehicle debris.

Anyone with information that could be helpful in the investigation is asked to call Aurora OPP at 905-841-5777.
