Additional sexual assault charges laid against Ontario coach, York Region teacher

York Regional Police has laid additional charges against a 40-year-old man from the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville in connection with sexual offences committed against children after an additional victim came forward.

On Feb. 9, 2022, police began an investigation into a hockey coach after officers received information regarding a sexual assault victim. Through the investigation, officers learned that the victim had been sexually assaulted while participating in private hockey lessons with the accused between 2016 and 2022, beginning when he was approximately eight years old.

Following a media release regarding the accused, officers received information on Feb. 14, 2022, about a second victim, aged 10, who reported that he was sexually assaulted last summer at the Haliburton Hockey Haven camp. Additional charges have been laid in connection with this incident.

The accused has been coaching hockey throughout Ontario for many years and has been a camp director with Haliburton Hockey Haven since 2016. He’s also a teacher in the York Region District School Board, where he has coached sports, and he has instructed at the Markham Tennis Club.

York Regional Police would also like remind people that there are community resources to help victims and survivors of sexual assault. The Cedar Centre http://www.cedarcentre.ca has produced videos to explain how they can provide assistance and courage to those wishing to come forward or seeking help when not yet ready to report to police. Investigators are releasing a photo of Kelvin Lee and are urging any additional victims or witnesses to come forward.

Sexual Assault Survivors Guide

A sexual assault includes any non-consensual contact of a sexual nature. York Regional Police would like to encourage anyone who feels they may have been a victim of a sexual assault to come forward and report the incident to police. There is no statute of limitations for sexual offences and offenders can be prosecuted well after the date of the offence. If you are the survivor of sexual assault, you can report the incident online if:

  • You are not in immediate danger, and person who assaulted you is not present
  • There is no evidence present that may be collected by police (blood, semen, saliva, etc.). Evidence can be collected for up to 12 days after the sexual assault has occurred
