'A little scary': Heavy police response at Newmarket home

Armed York Regional Police attended a property for 15 minutes, said response was to "potential disturbance"

UPDATE, 2:50 p.m. Aug. 30: York Regional Police said it could not provide any further details on the incident as it is an "active investigation."

"There is no concern for public safety at this time," police said.

Newmarket resident Lindsey Sharpe called it frightening to see several York Regional Police vehicles and officers with guns roll up onto her street Saturday night.

She said she first noticed them on her security camera and went outside to check about 10 p.m. A police van and other police vehicles had appeared on the road without sirens, approaching and surrounding a home farther down on Bondi Avenue.

“I didn’t hear anything. It was very odd, very quiet. Lights on the vehicles but no sirens at all, I’m sure most people didn’t realize anything was going on,” she said. “Seeing the police walking with big guns, was a little scary. I have children and this was basically happening in my driveway.”

The exact nature of the incident has not been revealed, and NewmarketToday did not receive a complete response from York Regional Police before publication time. A duty officer said police got a report of a “potential disturbance.”

The incident was over fairly quickly, Sharpe said, with police departing after approximately 15 minutes. The response also involved an officer with the canine unit.

Police did not immediately canvas the neighbourhood afterwards, she said.

Footage from Sharpe’s security camera shows a police van and police truck pulling up outside her driveway, with a canine officer following after. Several police vehicles were also on the street flashing lights.

Sharpe said she would like to know what exactly happened. She said she hopes if there are any issues with the house police attended to, something is done about it.

“Seeing everything, like the guns, I think that was the main thing that’s concerning,” she said. “Make you a little wary to let your kids outside.”

NewmarketToday will provide updates as they are made available.
