5 teens charged in attempted carjacking in Markham

Five teenagers from Toronto have been charged as part of a Provincial Carjacking Joint Task Force investigation in Markham.

On Dec. 6 at about 2:45 p.m., police responded to a collision at a school in the area of 16th Avenue and Markham Road. A white Audi SUV being operated by suspects intentionally collided with a grey Toyota RAV4 in an attempt to steal the vehicle, York Regional Police said in a news release.

Five suspects in the Audi fled on foot but were quickly apprehended, police said.

Police said the suspects were wearing masks, and an imitation firearm was recovered.

A 14-year-old, a 15-year-old and three 16-year-olds, all from Toronto, were arrested. Charges include robbery with a firearm, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, disguise with intent and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Two of the accused have also been charged with failure to comply with a release order (two counts), failure to comply with a sentence order and failure to comply with disposition (recognizance).
