2 men arrested after loaded handgun, drugs seized in Vaughan

Officers launched the investigation after finding a vehicle stopped on the road with a sleeping driver and passenger on New Year's Day, York Regional Police say

Two men have been arrested and a firearm and a quantity of drugs seized following a traffic stop in Vaughan on New Year's Day.

Officers were conducting a patrol in the area of Keele Street, south of Rivermede Road, when they observed a vehicle stopped on the road with a man in the driver's seat sleeping on Sunday, Jan. 1 at about 8:30 a.m., York Regional Police said. Another man was sleeping in the rear seat.

Police said when the driver awoke he attempted to flee from officers, but he and the passenger were arrested. A search of the occupants and vehicle resulted in the seizure of a loaded handgun, a large quantity of drugs and cash, according to police.

Search warrants were executed at one of the suspect’s residences in Toronto, where drugs and ammunition were found, police said.

Nicholas Baker, 28, of Toronto and James Nahshon, 28, of no fixed address have been arrested.

Charges include:
    •    Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle - Alcohol (Baker only)
    •    Over 80 mgs of Alcohol per 100 mls of Blood (Baker only)
    •    Possession For The Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine x2
    •    Possession For The Purpose of Trafficking - Opioid
    •    Possession of a Prohibited Firearm with Ammunition
    •    Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
    •    Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
    •    Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
    •    Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle
    •    Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm Without Registration Certificates
    •    Possession of a Weapon
