10 drivers charged in ongoing stunt driving, street racing crackdown in York Region

32 charges were laid after police say they boxed in vehicles speeding and driving dangerously on Highway 7

In its continued crackdown on speeding, stunt driving and racing, York Regional Police charged 10 drivers and impounded their vehicles last weekend in Vaughan.

In total, 32 charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act, 10 charges for stunt driving and 22 charges related to illegal vehicle modifications. Five people were also arrested for Criminal Code driving offences, including dangerous driving and impaired driving, according to a police news release.

Officers with the road safety bureau, the regional enforcement of priorities (REP) team, along with officers from Newmarket, Richmond Hill and Vaughan districts teamed up for the weekend investigation into street racing.

A large group of vehicles believed to be involved in racing in the area of Windflower Gate in Vaughan were observed on April 24, according to police.

Police were able to box in several vehicles that had fled from the area, speeding and driving dangerously eastbound on Highway 7. Six drivers were arrested and their vehicles towed and impounded. All drivers were charged with stunt driving and three were also charged with dangerous driving, police said.

Anyone caught driving more than 50 km/h over the posted speed limit can expect to be charged, have their vehicle towed and their licence suspended, police warn.

Citizens can report unsafe driving by calling 911 if the incident appears to be a potential life-threatening emergency, or by calling the non-emergency line for vehicle gatherings that appear to be preparing to race, or reporting the incident through Road Watch.
