Demand for new houses in the Greater Toronto Area was high last month, with York Region leading the pack for sales of new single-family homes, according to a report from the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD).

“We are continuing to see unprecedented activity in the GTA market,” said Dave Wilkes, BILD president & CEO. “The robust demand testifies to the continued attractiveness of the GTA as a place to call home.”

There were 1,020 sales of new single-family homes across the Greater Toronto Area and 409 of those were in York Region, according to data from Altus Group.

The next highest number for this house type was in Durham Region, with 276 sales, followed by Peel with 219 sales, and then Halton with 104 sales.

Toronto had the lowest number of sales for new single-family homes with only 12, however, the city led in the GTA for new condominium sales in April with 1,390.

York Region was second in this category with 960 new condo sales with the total for the GTA at 3,619 sales.

This was the highest number of new condominiums sold in April in more than 20 years, according to the report.

BILD also found the benchmark price for new apartment condo units sat at $1,058,432 last month, while the benchmark price for new single-family homes was at $1,395,190.

According to the report, the higher cost of single-family homes since last summer is a factor in the record-breaking condo sales.
