The Regional Municipality of York wants residents to hear about its plans to make the private housing market more affordable.

The region is hosting a public information session on May 1 about options for its affordable private market housing implementation plan. The plan, to be completed later this year, will aim to identify housing gaps and address affordability within the private market.

“York Region continues taking proactive steps to prioritize housing needs,” the region said in a news release. “This new plan will focus on action and advocacy to prioritize affordable housing options in partnership with other levels of government, the development industry and other stakeholders. Everyone plays a critical part in solving the housing affordability crisis."

Housing costs in York Region have ballooned over the years in the private market. The average home price in York Region was $1.33 million in March 2024 according to the Toronto Real Estate Board. Meanwhile, the region has struggled to meet goals for affordable housing development, missing targets for five years in a row.

The information session will provide highlights of the plan, details on identifying partnerships and a question and answer session with York Region staff.

The plan is separate from other efforts the region is taking to address housing and does not include subsidized housing. Other plans the region has include a 10-year housing and homelessness plan and a homelessness service system plan.

The affordable private market housing implementation plan is expected to go to regional council for approval in September.

The virtual public information session will run May 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. You can register via the municipal website.
