Newmarket Juried Art Show, to April 27: The annual juried show continues until April 27 and the reception is April 18 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Old Town Hall, 460 Botsford St. No admission charge. Find more details here

Nick Maclean Quartet featuring Brownman Ali: Celebrating the release of their recently Juno-nominated album Convergence, the Nick Maclean Quartet featuring decorated jazz trumpet iconoclast Brownman Ali is coming to Newmarket on their Ontario tour under the leadership of Global Music award-winning jazz pianist Nick Maclean. FB, tickets, $17.31, 6:30 p.m., show at 7 p.m. at Old Flame Brewing Co., Main Street Newmarket.

Film Fridays at Newmarket Library: Watch free movies at Film Fridays every Friday at Newmarket Public Library. Bring your own snacks, doors open at 1:45 p.m., movie starts at 2 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Saturday, April 20

CompassCon Pop-up Market with special guest Kurt Lehner: CompassCon features multiple exhibitors selling a range of products including board games, video games, comic books, toys, funko POPs, sports cards, trading cards, arts and crafts, as well as other collectibles from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 426, 707 Srigley St., Newmarket. Advance admission $2.50 (price goes up April 19), $5 at door, children 12 and under admitted for free. Kurt Lehner, an official commissioned artist for Stan Lee, creator of Marvel Comic, will be showcasing his professional catalogue of exclusive limited edition lithographs, most of which will be selling at a 70 per cent discount from U.S. retail prices in CAD dollar.

Electronics and Battery Recycling Event: You can drop off unwanted electronics and used batteries at the Town of Newmarket’s popular annual event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Robert N. Shelton Operations Centre at 1275 Maple Hill Court.  Accepted items include computers, headphones, cameras (including security cameras), TVs, telephones, cellphones, computer parts and used household batteries such as standard AA, AAA, C and D cell, 6 and 9-volt batteries and rechargeable battery packs. For more information on what is accepted and not, visit newmarket.ca/ecoevents.  

 

English Country Dance: Join the dance at Trinity United Church, 461 Park Ave. at Main Street, Newmarket from 2 to 4 p.m. Beginners welcome; all dances taught; you don't need to bring a partner. Admission by donation; your first class is free. Join the group on the first, third and (when there is one) fifth Saturday of the month.

Outdoor Meditation All Seasons: Join the meditation group every Saturday outdoors in the beautiful setting of Fairy Lake Park at 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., rain or shine, snow or sun, or blizzard (unless extreme.) Some mats, cushions, and chairs will be available. Dress appropriately for the weather, and feel free to bring a mat, cushion or folding chair if you like, but not necessary.

Burning Red Writers Round, Sunday, April 21: Bianca Rollo hosts an amazing night of country music and fantastic songwriting at the April Burning Red Writers Round with ​Rebecca Rain, The Beresfords, and Ty Wilson, doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 6:30 p.m. at Main Street Music Hall (upstairs at Old Flame Brewing Co.)

First Newmarket Comedy Festival, Saturday, April 27: The first ever Newmarket Comedy Festival features a line-up of hilarious comedians, including Cathy Boyd (Canada’s Got Talent), Kyle Brownrigg (Just For Laughs, CraveTV), Ernie Vicente (Just For Laughs Originals), Daniel Shaw (Cottage Comedy), Evan Dubois (Just For Laughs Toronto and Newmarket’s own Jesse Ralph. Don’t miss this stand-up comedy showcase at the Old Town Hall at 7 p.m. Tickets $30 + tax.

Pine Tree Potters' Guild Spring 2024 Pottery Show and Sale, May 2 to 5: More than 2,000 unique pieces of both functional and decorative porcelain, stoneware, and Raku pottery are on sale. Guild members are available during sale hours to answer your questions. Duende Kings - A Tribute to the Gipsy Kings, Friday, May 3: Duende Kings bring the passion and emotion of the Gipsy Kings alive in this tribute to the band, recreating their repertoire along with hits of ABBA, The Eagles, Van Morrison, and more, in flamenco-style at the Newmarket Old Town Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tickets $35. Duende Kings are a six-person collective of the GTA’s top musicians: Juneyt (guitar and vocals), Leo Orlov (guitar and vocals), Adam Kurgatnikov (bass), Aaron Seunarine (percussion), Aaron Spink (drums), and David Skolnick (accordion, guitar, piano, and vocals). 

Society of York Region Artists Art Show and Sale, May 4 to 5: The Town of Aurora and Society of York Region Artists host the 60th Annual Aurora Art Show and Sale with more than 300 pieces of artwork, including acrylic, oil, watercolour, photography, mixed media, and sculpture, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aurora Town Hall, 100 John West Way. Annual Community Plant Swap, Saturday, May 11: Newmarket Library holds its third plant swap, a great way to exchange plants with others and chat about growing and gardening, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the multipurpose room. Prepare by dividing your perennials such as hostas, irises and others, and place some in pots to share. Or take clippings from your houseplants and root them in pots. Town of Newmarket presents Spoons, Friday, May 31:  Enjoy a night of new wave and pop music from this Juno-nominated band featuring all their hits and fan favourites, along with some new songs and stories from the road at Newmarket’s NewRoads Performing Arts Centre at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are $49.15. Derrick Ross, Rob Preuss, Gord Deppe and Sandy Horne would help define the sound of pop and New Wave in the ‘80s, with hits including Nova Heart, Romantic Traffic, Old Emotions and Tell No Lies.
