Friday, April 12

Film Fridays at Newmarket Library: Watch free movies at Film Fridays every Friday at Newmarket Public Library. Bring your own snacks, doors open at 1:45 p.m., movie starts at 2 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tons of Clay at Olde Village Freehouse: The Tons of Clay band will be performing all your favourites at The Olde Village Freehouse on Main Street Newmarket at 9 p.m.

A Night of Illusion with illusionist Wij Siva: Northridge Church hosts illusionist Wij Siva. Doors open 7:30 p.m., show at 8 p.m. $40 per ticket, limited to 100 guests. Tickets and more info here.

Jessica Sole at Main Street Music Hall: For emerging artist, Jessica Sole, it’s always been about the storytelling. Based in small town, Shelburne, Ontario, Jessica is no stranger to hard work, down home roots, and dreaming big. Since the release of her debut EP, Think of Us, Jessica has been deemed “one of the hardest working artists in the Ontario country scene” by Country105 Radio and has been making waves in the Canadian country music scene. With over 4.5 million streams on TikTok alone, Jessica’s single Fallin’ For You became a milestone release. At Main Street Music Hall, 140 Main St S. Doors at 6:30 p.m., opening act Matt Teed will go on at 7 p.m., and Jessica will go on at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

Woodstock Lives: Glenn Marais and The Mojo Band and special guests bring peace, love and groovy tunes at 7 p.m., NewRoads Performing Arts Centre. Dress in your grooviest '60s clothes for this re-creation of the greatest concert ever held with music of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Santana, Sly and The Family Stone, The Who, CCR, The Grateful Dead, Joe Cocker and The Jefferson Airplane. Adult $45.20, senior/student/child $33.90. Please bring a non-perishable food item for the Newmarket Food Pantry.

Outdoor Meditation All Seasons: Join the meditation group every Saturday outdoors in the beautiful setting of Fairy Lake Park at 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., rain or shine, snow or sun, or blizzard (unless extreme.) Some mats, cushions, and chairs will be available. Dress appropriately for the weather, and feel free to bring a mat, cushion or folding chair if you like, but not necessary.

Game Night: Crosslands Church, 47 Millard Ave. West, hosts a game night for all ages from 5 to 7 p.m. with pickleball, volleyball, board games, card games, and the Nintendo Switch on the big screen. And come hungry to enjoy some pizza. Sign up in advance, $5 per person.

James Brown Trio featuring Mike Murley: Aurora Jazz Series presents James Brown, Clark Johnston and Mike Murley in concert at Trinity Anglican Church, 79 Victoria St., Aurora, from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets $11.98.

Burning Red Writers Round, Sunday, April 21: Bianca Rollo hosts an amazing night of country music and fantastic songwriting at the April Burning Red Writers Round with ​Rebecca Rain, The Beresfords, and Ty Wilson, doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 6:30 p.m. at Main Street Music Hall (upstairs at Old Flame Brewing Co.)

First Newmarket Comedy Festival, Saturday, April 27: The first ever Newmarket Comedy Festival features a line-up of hilarious comedians, including Cathy Boyd (Canada’s Got Talent), Kyle Brownrigg (Just For Laughs, CraveTV), Ernie Vicente (Just For Laughs Originals), Daniel Shaw (Cottage Comedy), Evan Dubois (Just For Laughs Toronto and Newmarket’s own Jesse Ralph. Don’t miss this stand-up comedy showcase at the Old Town Hall at 7 p.m. Tickets $30 + tax.

Pine Tree Potters' Guild Spring 2024 Pottery Show and Sale, May 2 to 5: More than 2,000 unique pieces of both functional and decorative porcelain, stoneware, and Raku pottery are on sale. Annual Community Plant Swap, Saturday, May 11: Newmarket Library holds its third plant swap, a great way to exchange plants with others and chat about growing and gardening, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the multipurpose room. Prepare by dividing your perennials such as hostas, irises and others, and place some in pots to share. Or take clippings from your houseplants and root them in pots.
