Thursday, Jan. 25

Beautifully Human presents Bliss, Beats and Beer An inspirational night of meditation and drumming followed by a social afterwards from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Main Street Music Hall (Old Flame), 140 Main St. S. Tickets here. Meet Glenn Marais at the side door on Millard Avenue at 6:30 to pick up your drum. Cost: $40, which includes one beer at the bar downstairs, or $35 without a beer.

Friday, Jan. 26

LOL @ Hungry Brew Hops with Cathy Boyd: Sin Bin Comedy presents a night of laughs at Hungry Brew Hops, Main Street, Newmarket with headliner Cathy Boyd (Canada's Got Talent), with comedian Jesse Ralph. Doors open at 8 p.m. (2nd floor), show at 9 p.m. Tickets, $25, online. 

Curtain Club presents Deathtrap, to Feb 3: Ira Levin's Deathtrap is featured at the Curtain Club Theatre, 400 Newkirk Dr., Richmond Hill. Tickets $24 - 905-773-3434.

Saturday, Jan. 27

Come Try Tai Chi: Open house and free class from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at 1220 Stellar Dr., Unit 203B, Newmarket, hosted by a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people improve and/or regain their health through 108 Move Tai Chi. Instructors are fully accredited and volunteer their time. Tai chi draws on its martial arts origins, the moves are all about flexibility and revitalization. It's effective and anyone can learn.

Newmarket Folk Society presents the Fitzgeralds: The Fitzgeralds are a family group consisting of fiddling and step-dancing siblings — Tom, Kerry and Julie Fitzgerald. This unique act incorporates high-energy fiddling and mind-blowing step dancing. Robbie Burns Night: An evening of bagpipes, Scottish music, and dancing beginning at 5 p.m. Enjoy haggis, roast beef, “tatties and neeps,” and Yorkshire pudding at the Aurora Legion on Industrial Parkway. Performance by White Heather Pipes and Drums, and Toronto Police Pipe Band. Tickets, $60, available from the Aurora Legion or band members.

Live At The Met presents Carmen: At SilverCity Newmarket or Cineplex Odeon Aurora at 12:55 p.m. Just like a night at the opera.

Connon Nurseries Winter Farmers Market: Connon Nurseries, 1870 Davis Dr. West, King, holds a farmers market with an array of vendors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday until March 30.

Outdoor Meditation All Seasons: Join the meditation group every Saturday outdoors in the beautiful setting of Fairy Lake Park at 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., rain or shine, snow or sun, or blizzard (unless extreme.) Some mats, cushions, and chairs will be available. Dress appropriately for the weather, and feel free to bring a mat, cushion or folding chair if you like, but not necessary.

Chinese Story Chinese Year: The 2024 Canadian Chinese and Overseas Chinese Spring Festival Gala takes place at Richmond Hill Performing Arts Centre, 10268 Yonge St., from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. VIP reception 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tickets from $41.

26th Annual Newmarket Voice Festival, applications by Jan. 26: The Newmarket Voice Festival will be held Feb. 20 to 24, with a Concert of the Stars Friday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Town Hall in Newmarket.  Deadline for entries is Jan. 26. Categories offered in musical theatre, popular voice, classical voice, songs from the screen and more, and speech arts for performers of all ages five and up. Professional adjudicators provide written and verbal feedback to each participant. Many scholarships available (almost $13,000 awarded in 2023) and adjudicators will also recommend singers and actors for the OMFA Provincial Finals in Oakville June 10 to 15. Black History Month reception, art exhibition and Ujamaa Marketplace, Saturday, Feb. 3: Celebrate Black History Month with the Town of Newmarket and NACCA with live entertainment, featured guests, keynote address, dance, spoken word and more from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Old Town Hall, 460 Botsford St. Reserve a spot here. Black History Month art exhibition, Feb. 3 to 29: This year's exhibit presented by NACCA interprets the theme Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now - Telling Our Story, Writing Our History by showcasing of Black Canadian history and experiences.
