There are plenty of holiday events this weekend, including Christmas movies, Christmas movie trivia night, Persian Yalda Night, shopping at Niemi's Christmas market, Frozen Fridays, a Santa comedy night, and community Christmas lunch

Thursday, Dec. 21

Movie Night at the Brewery:  Old Flame Brewery kicks off Christmas Weekend with some seasonal nostalgia, a screening of Home Alone in the Main Street Music Hall ( Event space above the Newmarket Taproom, 120 Main St. S., from 6 to 9 p.m.There will be seasonal treats, popcorn, holiday brews available for purchase, and a kids craft station. Movie is $5.65 and includes a free core lager (or non-alcoholic drink.) Reserve your tickets here, space is limited.

Ghosts & Goblins host Holiday Movie Trivia: Join trivia night featuring iconic films like Elf, The Muppet Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, and Home Alone. Test your knowledge of these timeless favourites, relive the laughter, and compete for fantastic prizes at 6:30 p.m. at Ghosts & Goblins, 17766 Leslie St, Newmarket. Ticket $40 per team. Persian Yalda Night: Celebrate the longest night of the year with Persian music, dance, and culture with Negin, Negar, Hourasa, and their mentees from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Old Town Hall, 460 Botsford St, Newmarket. Tickets $49.87.

Lunch at Allen's: Canadian music supergroup Lunch At Allen’s is coming to Newmarket at NewRoads Performing Arts Centre, 505 Pickering Cres. at 7:30 p.m. Murray McLauchlan, Cindy Church, Marc Jordan and Ian Thomas formed the band in 2004. Individually, they’ve written for or sung on over 25 million CDs and are known for their contributions as songwriters to music heavyweights such as Chicago, Santana, Cher, and Rod Stewart. Niemi's Christmas Market, to Dec. 23: The Niemi Family Farm,  18463 Highway 48, Mount Albert, hosts its 5th Annual Christmas Market from 3 to 8 p.m. A magical outdoor experience with dozens of local vendors, free admission, hot food available for purchase.

Holiday Nights Of Lights: Holiday Nights of Lights is an immersive walk-through experience featuring more than 1.5 million LED lights animated and synchronized to favourite holiday tunes Thursday to Sunday from 5 to 11 p.m. until Jan. 7 (closed Christmas Day.) Back for the fourth year, the event is bigger and brighter with new displays and interactive activities at 80 Interchange Way in Vaughan. Patrons will have the opportunity to experience walking through giant ornaments, animated tunnels, and much more. Friday, Dec. 22

Film Friday at Newmarket Public Library: Enjoy a free screening of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989), doors open at 1:45 p.m., movie at 2 p.m. No registration required, just drop in at the library’s multipurpose room. Children must be accompanied by an adult, bring your own snacks. The movie features holiday hilarity when Clark Griswold tries to orchestrate the perfect family Christmas. His attempts quickly go south with overcooked turkeys, a family tree going up in flames, and other mishaps. Rated PG-13

Frozen Fridays: Frozen Fridays returns to Riverwalk Commons with live DJ music, outdoor skating, train rides on the Tim Hortons Express Train (weather permitting), free hot chocolate, performances, LED Mega Tree shows, photo opportunities and more from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Free event, sponsored by Mercedes Benz Newmarket. Board Gaming: Join local board game enthusiasts at Cardinal Press Espresso Bar at 200 Main St. Newmarket from 6 to 10 p.m. The games are provided and teachers are available, or you bring your games to teach others. Note from organizers: We don't tend to play a lot of 'traditional' board games such as Monopoly, Clue, Sorry! Let them know what you would like to play when you RSVP and they will bring those games.

Saturday, Dec. 23

Outdoor Meditation All Seasons: Join the meditation group every Saturday outdoors in the beautiful setting of Fairy Lake Park at 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., rain or shine, snow or sun, or blizzard (unless extreme.) Some mats, cushions, and chairs will be available. Dress appropriately for the weather, and feel free to bring a mat, cushion or folding chair if you like, but not necessary.

Sin Bin Comedy present Santa's Standup Comedy Christmas Extravaganza: Santa is gearing up for Christmas Eve but he is making a fun, relaxing stop at Perfect SZN, 100 Dissette St. in Bradford, where he'll host some of the best comedians around. Featuring Jesse Ralph, Matt Baker, Greg Enwright, and some room favourites. See how good Santa is at sleighing crowds and slinging jokes. This is not going to be your PG-13 Santa - he's got some rum and eggnog on the ready.Tickets $25. Doors open at 8:30 p.m., show at 9 p.m.

Monday, Dec. 25

Free Community Christmas Lunch: Deb Hatton continues the annual tradition for a free community Christmas lunch, all are welcome, at the Newmarket Community Centre 200 Doug Duncan Dr., from 1 to 3 p.m. Sit down and take-out offered.
