Friday, March 3

Newmarket Public Library's Film Fridays: Enjoy Amsterdam (2022), a mystery thriller set in 1933, in which three friends seek to uncover a political conspiracy. The film is based on the Business Plot, which took place when a group of wealthy business people in the U.S. made plans to overthrow the government of president Franklin D. Roosevelt. Starring Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, and a star-studded supporting cast that includes Mike Myers, Chris Rock, Taylor Swift and Robert De Niro. Rated 14A. No registration required, just drop in and enjoy a free movie in the multipurpose room, from 2 to 4:15 p.m.  

Disco Skating hosted by Newmarket Youth Leadership Group: Local youth are invited to skate like its the 1970s at a free disco skating event hosted by the Newmarket Youth Leadership Group starting at 7 p.m. at Riverwalk Commons outdoor rink. There will be music, a performance by the Newmarket Skating Club, free snacks, and more live entertainment, prizes for the best disco costumes. 

Board Gaming: Join local board game enthusiasts at Cardinal Press Espresso Bar at 200 Main St. Newmarket from 6 to 10 p.m. The games are provided and teachers are available, or you bring your games to teach others. Note from organizers: We don't tend to play a lot of 'traditional' board games such as Monopoly, Clue, Sorry! Let them know what you would like to play when you RSVP and they will bring those games. 

Saturday, March 4

12th Annual Curling for Puppies Bonspiel: After a long hiatus, the North Newmarket Lions Club hosts a fun day or evening of curling at the Bradford Curling Club, 125 Simcoe Rd. for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. All funds raised go to the cost of providing service dogs to members of the community. Morning group from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and evening group from 5 to 11 p.m. Cost: $300 per team. FIRST Robotics Competition: Teams of high school students compete in challenges with robots they have designed, built and programed at Ray Twinney Recreation Complex, Newmarket from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admittance free, masks required.

English Country Dance: Join the dance at Trinity United Church, 461 Park Ave. at Main Street, Newmarket from 2 to 4 p.m. Beginners welcome; all dances taught; you don't need to bring a partner. Admission by donation; your first class is free. Join the group on the first, third and (when there is one) fifth Saturday of the month.

Maplefest at Brooks Farm: Brooks Farm at 122 Ashworth Rd., Mount Albert hosts Maplefest every weekend to March 19 and every day during March Break, with a train ride to the maple sugar bush for an educational tour on how they tap and bottle maple syrup. Pancake breakfast available for purchase. Includes self-guided and guided educational tours, camp fire in sugar bush, evaporator demos, hot chocolate, maple sugar products, barnyard playland (weather permitting). Tickets available online or at farm. $12.99 + HST.

Aurora Cultural Centre, Signature Series: JUNO nominee, Canadian Folk Award winner, citizen of the Métis Nation and stalwart of the Canadian Roots scene, Amanda Rheuame brings us her powerful guitar ballads to make space for new perspectives on resistance and resilience. Doors open 6:45 p.m., concert 7:30 p.m. Tickets $44.25.

Newmarket Cycles Group Ride: Explore Newmarket by bike at Newmarket Cycles’ free family-friendly group ride from 2 to 3 p.m., starting and ending at 621 Timothy St. Riders are reminded to dress for the weather. No registration required.

NewRoads 12th Annual Girls Night Out, March 8: To Celebrate 2023 International Women's Day, NewRoads Automotive Group is hosting the 12th annual Girls Night Out Event at NewRoads Performing Arts Centre, Newmarket, at 6:30 p.m. The fun evening celebrates local women-owned businesses with an indoor market featuring local vendors, as well as raises money for Girls Inc. CHATS' Whisky Tasting, Tuesday, March 21: CHATS hosts Better with Age with Keith Scott and the Aurora Whisky Society for an interactive experience in the world of whisky at The Shed Stonehaven Banquet Hall, Aurora. You will start your tour with a full-service cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by a full three-course buffet meal at 7 p.m., followed by the whisky experience at 8 p.m. featuring five whiskies from around the world. Tickets, $135, or $1,080 for a table of eight.

York Chamber Ensemble, Saturday, March 25: York Chamber Ensemble presents In Search of Love at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Newmarket - 7:30 p.m. Tickets $25 at www.yorkchamberensemble.ca.

The Cross of Christ, Friday, March 31: St. John Chrysostom presents The Cross of Christ, an original oratorio based on the seven last words of Christ on the cross. This sacred musical work, written for four operatic voices and orchestra, was entirely composed by Romulo Delgado, one of Canada’s top tenors, region finalist at the Hans Gabor Belvedere International Opera competition in Vienna, Austria. The symphony for the performance of the Cross of Christ will be conducted by Denis Mastromonaco, featuring: Romulo Delgado, tenor and composer; Andrew Tees, bass-baritone; Lillian Brooks, mezzo-soprano; and Sara Papini, soprano.
