A water main break in Newmarket has left 40 homes without water temporarily.

A spokesperson for the Town of Newmarket said the break occurred on Harrison Drive, between Cherrywood Road and Longford Drive, at about 12:40 p.m. on Jan. 12.

Crews are on the scene to repair the break but water has been shut off for about 40 homes in the area.

The road is not closed, but drivers are asked to yield to oncoming traffic in the area.

There is currently no estimated timeline for when the repairs will be completed, the town said.

Recently another water main break affected residents in the area of Main Street North.

The minor break happened on Dec. 31, leaving 14 houses without water service for a few hours while repairs were underway.

Rob Gillis, manager of water and wastewater at the Town of Newmarket, said water main breaks are common in the winter due to changing temperatures.

"With Newmarket experiencing extreme cold weather a few days ago and temperatures rising a bit today, the freeze and thaw cycle may cause the ground to shift and the shifting of the ground can make water mains more brittle causing them to break. However, it is hard to determine the exact reason why a water main would break as there are many other factors as well," he said.

Gillis said staff work quickly to repair any breaks to limit how long residents are without water.

"When a water main does break, when possible, staff will notify the residents affected and conduct the repairs as soon as possible to limit the service disruption to the community. We would like to thank residents for their patience as we work to restore service as soon as possible.”
