Newmarket is declaring a significant weather event and warning that winter clearing activities will take longer amidst anticipated snowfall and freezing rain.

The town announced the declaration for Dec. 15 after Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a weather advisory. The organization expects the region to get hit by significant snowfall, plus freezing and drizzling rain.

The town advised to take extra caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

“Weather hazards provided by Environment and Climate Change Canada have the potential to pose a significant danger to users of all roads within Newmarket,” the town said, adding that plows will focus on primary roads and routes, followed by secondary ones.

The town is projected to get 10 cm of snow starting early afternoon.

The town said residents should avoid parking on the street to allow snow plows to pass.

It also said property owners can help the town by clearing sidewalks adjacent to their property and avoiding shovelling snow on the street.

You should also respect snow plow operators, the municipality said.

“Be courteous and kind to all Newmarket snow crews,” the municipality said. “The town understands that heavy snowfalls can be frustrating for residents. However, please avoid approaching snow plow operators when they are doing their work.”
