The NWMRKTproud fundraising campaign is getting underway for the local food bank and municipality is backing it.

The Town of Newmarket has agreed to declare June 3 NWMRKTproud day as the organization prepares its annual Pride shirt fundraiser supporting the Newmarket Food Pantry.

Representatives told Newmarket council April 15 that they hope to raise $30,000 for the food pantry this year.

“We know we can do it because that’s why we’re NWMRKTproud,” Rebecca Gardiner said. “The community is such an awesome place to live and work, and the community members and business have really rallied behind our cause.”

For the past couple of years, the group has raised funds for the pantry with themed clothing. The campaign brought in more than $27,000 for the food pantry last year, combined with sales of shirts, toques and sponsorships.

Joanne Sweers said the need for donations to the pantry remains high, with visits increasing more than 76 per cent over the last two years.

“This is more than a shirt. It’s a symbol of community support,” Sweers said. “It has local impact. We’re making a real difference in the lives of our neighbours. Every dollar goes toward fighting food insecurity right here in Newmarket, and we get to show our love for this vibrant town, as well as celebrate Pride Month.”

Organizers are looking for corporate sponsors and are planning another launch event at Market Brewing June 3. The campaign will include a booth at the Newmarket Farmer’s Market in June, participation in the York Pride festival, as well as Market Brewing creating a NWMRKTproud beer can.

Council members praised the fundraising campaign.

“Thank you to you for taking this initiative and growing it,” Councillor Bob Kwapis said. “We’re a proud community, and we need to help each other, and what’s the best way to do that? Well, let’s help out the ones that really need the help.”

“This community’s always willing to step up and step forward to help support,” Newmarket Mayor John Taylor said. “It is, at its core, something really important. It’s about community spirit, community pride, making sure that we think about every single person in our community.”

The campaign is seeking corporate sponsors and silent auction items. You can contact 289-221-4282 or 289-231-1600 for information and to donate.

“This shirt is a symbol of community spirit, a celebration of all that makes Newmarket great,” Sweers said.
