Streets closing for Newmarket's Christmas tree lighting, parades

Holiday festivities running through town Nov. 18 and 19

The Town of Newmarket is readying to close streets next week for holiday parades.

The town has announced it will be closing Main Street the evening of Friday, Nov. 18, as well as Water Street to Park Avenue, for the candlelight parade and tree lighting. That will be followed the next day by closures on Cane Parkway, Lorne Avenue and Eagle Street to make way for the return of the Santa Claus parade.

The candlelight parade will close Main Street and Water Street to Park Avenue from 5 to 8 p.m. The annual tradition features hundreds of people marching down Main Street, capped off with carols and the lighting of the town’s Christmas tree at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

The Santa Claus parade, returning to Newmarket for the first time in three years, will have streets closing longer for the parade route. Cane Parkway and Lorne Avenue northbound to Eagle Street, as well as Lorne Avenue north of Eagle Street to Avenue Road, will be closed from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Portions of Eagle Street — from Helmer Avenue to Water Street then up Main Street to Davis Drive — will close from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
