The annual Break the Silence - Step in My Shoes walk is returning as in-person event this year in support of Yellow Brick House.

“Yellow Brick House provides a safe haven for women and children to escape violent and abusive homes,” said Lorris Herenda, chief executive officer of Yellow Brick House. “By walking to celebrate their strength, we can show these women and children how much they matter, how much you care, and make their safety a priority, maybe for the first time in their lives.”

Through this event, Yellow Brick House aims to raise $100,000 to support its services and programs. Every $150 raised provides a night of safety for a woman or child impacted by abuse or violence.

Domestic violence has risen by 30 per cent throughout the pandemic, Yellow Brick House said, meaning it's more important than ever to support survivors.

The walk will be on Sunday, Nov. 6 at St. Andrew's College in Aurora. The walk itself is at 10 a.m. and there are also family-friendly activities, entertainment, and refreshments.

This event marks a return to in-person fundraising for Yellow Brick House, which previously held the walk virtually due to the pandemic.

In 2021, participants were invited to do their own walk and make a video about their experience. The submissions were compiled and screened at a drive-in event at Stardust Theatre in Sharon.

By returning to the walk around St. Andrew's College's campus, Yellow Brick House is continuing in an ongoing partnership with the school.

“We are definitely committed to a long-term partnership in this movement where we have young men really getting involved with the issue and raising awareness about gender-based violence,” Herenda said previously.

Registration for this year's walk is free and now open online
