Smoking was the likely cause of a basement fire Sunday evening at a Longford Avenue home in Newmarket, Central York Fire Services said.
There were no injuries in the Dec. 22 fire that was called in about 5 p.m. after flames were seen coming from the basement window. Fire officials say improperly disgarded smoking material likely started the fire.
The first fire captain that arrived on the scene saw smoke coming from the window and crews found a partly extinguished fire on the side of the house.
The local fire crew put the fire out and the home’s occupants were able to remain there as very minor damage was reported.
The smoke migrated into the attic but the fire did not, Central York fire officials said.
Central York fire sent out six fire trucks and one platoon chief to the scene. York Regional Police and York Region Paramedic Services were also on the scene.
