Show selections announced for Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays

The play bill has been announced for the 2022 Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays. 

The festival, which runs from Sept. 8 to 11, will feature 11 shows, the Very Useful Theatre Company said. The plays were selected out of more than 80 entries. 

“It was not an easy process”, said selection committee chair Bruce Williamson, who won the award for best director at last year's festival. "But in the end, we think we've chosen an excellent selection of plays that will offer patrons a most entertaining night out”.

All the shows will be performed at Newmarket's Old Town Hall in front of an in-person and live stream audience. 

Each evening of the festival will feature two shorter one-act plays, followed by an intermission and then a longer one-act play. On Sunday, a matinee will showcase the young talent in the Very Useful Theatre Company's youth company.

The youth show is being directed by Kira Rosenbloom, who also wrote the short play they will be performing. She will also lead a series of workshops for young actors leading up to festival where the company will select another short play for the youth company to perform.

  • Ug and the First Play Ever – a comedy by Jim Geoghan
  • Sun, Moon and Selena – a fable by Paul Pasulka
  • The Booth - a comedy by Val Stulman
  • Death Does Larry – a comedy by Cary Pepper
  • Ahava – a comedy by Dana Hall & David Lipchutz
  • Back Porch Gang – a comedy by Ben Scranton
  • From The Membrane of the Nucleus – a drama by Peter A. Balaskas
  • 107 – a mystery by Len Cuthbert
  • Waiting – a romance by Donna Sorbello
  • Emotional – the Young Actors, comedic/life lessons entry, by Kira Rosenbloom
  • T.B.A – V.U.T. C.'s Young Actors Company production from workshops

Tickets for the festival will be available later in the summer and will cost $20 in advance or you can buy a full festival pass for $60. Tickets will also be available at the door for $25.
