Registration open for Indigenous, international languages program

Any student is eligible to learn to read, write and speak a new language or maintain their heritage language, YRDSB says

Registration is open to all students for York Region District School Board’s elementary and secondary Indigenous Languages and International Languages (ILIL) program. 

Students are not required to be a YRDSB student to enrol in the language courses, and students outside of York Region are also welcome to register.

Elementary

Students in senior kindergarten to Grade 8 learn to read, write and speak a new language or maintain their heritage language. No experience is necessary in a language to enrol in the extra-curricular classes.

Students should register by Sept. 11, 2023 to attend the full program. Registration will reopen after Monday, Sept. 25, 2023 to fill remaining spots.

More than 20 different language courses are available outside of regular school hours. A list of languages available to elementary students, site locations, class days/times and registration information, is available online

Secondary Credit Courses

    •    Secondary students can earn credits towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
    •    Secondary credit courses are delivered in an online format.
    •    The program is delivered virtually through synchronous learning, supported by asynchronous activities.
    •    Courses run for the full program year from September to June.
