Newmarket-Aurora MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy is hosting a town hall alongside York Regional Police to address car theft and break-ins.

Residents are invited to the Aurora town hall March 21 to discuss community safety and strengthen neighbourhood security.

Gallagher Murphy said after speaking with York Regional Police about safety concerns, she felt the event was needed to help educate residents about initiatives police are undertaking.

“Protecting communities and keeping people and their property safe is of the utmost importance,” Gallagher Murphy said, adding the event will increase awareness of police activities. “We have the finest police service here in York Region and they were quick to advise me of the various initiatives that were taking place to ensure public safety in our community.”

Car theft has become a point of focus for government and police in recent months. The federal and provincial governments came to Aurora to announce a $121 million boost to address rising car theft. York Region councillors also expressed concern about rising vehicle thefts during the 2024 budget deliberations and considered more funding to police.

Between 2022 and 2023, Newmarket saw its most combined motor vehicle thefts in a two-year span in nearly 20 years.

Gallagher Murphy said Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas offered the municipal chambers to host the event after a conversation.

“I would like to thank the mayor for his participation and the Town of Aurora for hosting this town hall,” she said.

She also expressed appreciation for York Regional Police’s efforts.

“York Regional Police is a strong advocate for community building, including their desire to ensure our community members feel safe and protected. They are the ones doing the great work to support our community to protect us and keep us safe,” Gallagher Murphy said. “I look forward to participating with them at this Town Hall.

The event will occur March 21 at the Aurora town hall at 100 John West Way from 7 to 9 p.m.
