Man released on bail, arrested same day for attempted carjacking in Newmarket

A 21-year-old man has been arrested after a woman was approached in her driveway by a man demanding the keys to her car in Newmarket Wednesday.

The woman refused and the suspect fled, and she immediately called police about the incident that occurred near McCaffery Road and Eagle Street West at about 4 p.m. Oct. 4, York Regional Police said in a news release.

With the help of York Regional Police’s helicopter, a suspect was found nearby in a landscaping truck and trailer, which police said had been stolen. When officers on the ground attempted to stop a suspect, several police vehicles were hit. Nobody was injured.

Navjot Singh of no fixed address is charged with robbery; possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; break and enter with intent; theft of motor vehicle over $5,000; flight from peace officer; dangerous operation; two counts of failure to comply with judicial release order; and obstruct peace officer.

Singh had been released on bail earlier that day for unrelated charges and then walked from the Newmarket Courthouse to nearby McCaffery Road, police said.
