NWMRKT Proud t-shirts boost civic pride, support food pantry, Pride

The makers of the NWMRKTproud tuques have created a new t-shirt in support of the Newmarket Food Pantry and Pride Month

The people behind the popular NWMRKT Proud tuques are back with a new t-shirt so you can show your civic pride while supporting Pride Month and the Newmarket Food Pantry.

"After the success of the tuque campaign, we knew we wanted to do some kind of t-shirt this summer. Originally, it was going to be a black T-shirt with the same logo as the toque. June is Pride Month and the logo transitioned really well into the pride colours. Promoting NWMRKT Proud Pride edition seemed to be a perfect fit for the month," said Joanne Sweers, who is involved in the campaign along with her friend, Rebecca Gardiner.

They raised $7,000 through tuque sales and donations, all in support of the Newmarket Food Pantry.

"We have had great response from our community so far. Everyone loves the design and the idea of helping our neighbours while showing pride in the community that we live and work in. Tuques were popular, but we think the t-shirts will be even more so," she said.

With the cost of living and food prices rising, Sweers and Gardiner said that the food pantry is seeing an increased need in the community. They are hoping this fundraising will support the increased need.

Starting next month, the t-shirts will be available for a $20. You can get them at the Newmarket Farmers' Market June 3 and 10 and June 17 at the York Pride Festival at Riverwalk Commons.

There will also be a launch event for the t-shirts June 5 at Market Brewing Company.

There will be live entertainment with Newmarket musician Glenn Marais and comedian Jesse Ralph. There will also be door prizes and a silent auction with all proceeds going to support the Newmarket Food Pantry.

The NWMRKT Proud event goes from 7 to 10 p.m. Monday, June 5.
