Newmarket restaurant closed, Aurora eatery charged with health violations

A Newmarket restaurant was temporarily closed, and restaurants in Aurora and at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital were charged by York Region Public Health inspectors last week.

Cousins Steakhouse & Bar at 1-2 - 110 Pony Dr. in Newmarket was ordered to close on Thursday, March 7 under the Health Protection and Promotion Act, section 13 for the owner/operator failing to maintain the food premises in a clean and sanitary condition, according to the inspection report.

The report notes the following items as not in compliance at the time of the inspection: fail to properly store all food in a manner that prevents contamination or adulteration, including separating raw from ready-to-eat foods; fail to sanitize utensils using a chemical solution at the minimum concentration in a mechanical dishwasher; adjust or repair malfunctioning cooler; fail to maintain records of pest control measures taken; fail to equip washroom with both hot and cold running water and fail to keep washroom facility sanitary; fail to provide lighting adequate to food preparation and cleaning; fail to maintain the premises in a clean and sanitary condition; fail to ensure presence of certified food handler or supervisor during all hours of operation; and operate food premises maintained in manner adversely affecting sanitary condition

The restaurant was re-opened the following day, March 8, following re-inspection, with fail to provide lighting adequate to food preparation and cleaning the only item not in compliance. 

Minami Sushi Japanese Restaurant at 106 - 14785 Yonge St. in Aurora was charged March 8 with food premise maintained in manner adversely affecting sanitary operation.

The report notes the following items as not in compliance at the time of the inspection: fail to maintain handwashing station; fail to provide hot and cold water under pressure; fail to ensure equipment surface cleaned as necessary; fail to ensure walls are kept clean/in good repair; fail to ensure floors are kept clean/in good repair; fail to ensure presence of certified food handler or supervisor during all hours of operation.

Acceptable temporary measures are in place and a re-inspection will be conducted, according to the report.

Following a March 9 inspection prompted by a complaint, public health inspectors charged Sodexo, operators of OBC Grill at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, 3200 Major Mackenzie Dr. West, Vaughan, with fail to ensure food handler in food premise washes hands as necessary to prevent contamination of food areas.

Food handler education was conducted on site, the report stated.

The inspection reports represent the condition of the restaurants at the date and time of the inspection only and does not guarantee or warrant the condition of the food premises at any other time, the public health unit states.
