Newmarket event raising awareness of human trafficking in York Region

May 11 event is open to 'anyone interested in better understanding a serious problem in our local communities'

Human trafficking is a problem here in York Region and across Canada.

Parents, teachers, emergency responders and the community are invited to attend the human trafficking awareness event in the Great Hall at the York Region Administrative Centre, 17250 Yonge St., Newmarket, on Saturday, May 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to learn about the human trafficking in our communities, how to spot signs of someone being groomed or trafficked, preventive measures for parents and resources to support survivors.

Central York Fire Services is hosting the event with the Ontario Provincial Police, York Regional Police and Regional Municipality of York, including York Region Paramedic Services and other community partners working toward eradicating human trafficking.

"The event is open to anyone interested in better understanding a serious problem in our local communities," a news release said. 

Attendees can connect with community partners, participate in discussions with experts in the field of human trafficking, and learn how to can help combat human trafficking. The event includes community booths, expert presentations and discussions covering local trends, survivor perspectives and police initiatives to address the issue.

Experts include: Anna Roberts, King-Vaughan MP, on national initiatives to combat human trafficking; members of York Regional Police human trafficking unit; and Cheryl Perera, founder and president of One Child on preventive measures for parents.

Community partners include Elizabeth Fry Society Hope and Help for Women, Bridge North Women’s Mentorship and Advocacy Services, Lifeworthy, 360kids HOPE program, Dnaagdawenmag Binnoojiiyag Child & Family Services, Midaynta Community Services, York Region District School Board, York Region Transit and Transit Enforcement and York Region Public Health.
