The Newmarket Optimist Club is holding its first annual Youth Visual Arts Competition May 28.

Private and public secondary school students who live in or attend school in Newmarket are invited to enter their artwork.

Students can submit their work in one or more of the four categories, including painting, drawing, photography and alternative media.

Local artists will judge the work and select awards for first, second and third place in all categories. First place artists will receive $100, second place artists will receive $50 and third place artists will receive $25.

The event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. and will include gallery-style viewing of the artwork in the main hall at the Optimist Youth Centre at 55 Forhan Ave.

All participants must register by May 15 and all work must be submitted by May 25.

Submissions must be accompanied by the artist's name, phone number, address and name of school.

To submit artwork, visit the Newmarket Optimist Club website to register.
