Three Newmarket residents were unable to return to their home following a fire caused by careless smoking that began on a backyard deck early this morning, according to Central York Fire Services.

Firefighters responded to reports of a deck and fence fire at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, July 30 at a house on Irwin Crescent, which is in the Huron Heights neighbourhood, to find flames had spread from the fence to the second floor and attic.

With six fire trucks and a command vehicle on the scene, the fire was declared under control in less than an hour, at about 1:20 a.m.

The fire originated in the back deck area and was caused by improperly discarded smoking material, the report states.

As a result of the serious damage caused by the fire, the three occupants of the home have been displaced, according to the incident report.

No injuries occurred, however, two firefighters were assessed and cleared by York Paramedic Services at the scene.
