The Town of Newmarket has declared a significant weather event as a large snowstorm is expected to hit overnight Jan. 12.

The declaration made at 3:30 p.m. comes with an expected 10 to 25 centimetres of snow, high gusts of wind and potential freezing rain. The declaration will remain in effect until further notice and means residents can expect snow plowing and clearing will take longer than expected.

“The above weather hazards provided by Environment and Climate Change Canada have the potential to pose a significant danger to users of all roads within Newmarket,” the town said. “Please take extra caution and avoid unnecessary travel.”

The expected snowstorm has also caused warnings from Environment Canada and resulted in the town postponing the annual mayor’s levee.

The town said residents can help by avoiding parking on streets and allowing snow plows to pass. You can park overnight at a municipal lot through an off-street parking permit.

Property owners are also encouraged to aid the town in clearing sidewalks adjacent to their property.

“When clearing snow adjacent to your property, remember not to shovel snow on the street. Be a good neighbour and lend a hand to those who are physically unable to shovel or have difficulty leaving their home due to snow or ice,” the town said.

Nothing on your property should obstruct sidewalk snow plows, the town said.

“Please be patient, respect our snow plow operators and give them the space they need to plow the area.”

You can contact the town’s customer service to report fallen tree branches or if you have questions or concerns at [email protected] or 905-895-5193. Press 3 if calling after hours.

You can report outages to NT Power at 1-888-735-4801 or view its outage dashboard.
