The Town of Newmarket is postponing tonight's mayor’s levee to mark the arrival of 2024 as Environment Canada is warning another winter storm is on its way.

The event, originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 12, will now be held Feb. 2. Environment Canada issued a winter storm watch Jan. 11, with 10 to 25 centimetres of snow expected throughout the region starting Friday night.

“We've been monitoring the weather forecast hoping that we could host this great event (Jan. 12), however given the potential for dangerous and unpleasant conditions, we're postponing the levee out of an abundance of caution,” the town said in a news release.

The annual levee hosted at the Riverwalk Commons celebrates the new year with Newmarket Mayor John Taylor and councillors and promises a free evening of entertainment, treats and raffle prizes.
