As the Black Friday weekend shopping blitz comes to an end, Newmarket non-profits are asking you to give back to good community causes.
Organizations throughout town and York Region are making pleas for support this Giving Tuesday Nov. 28. The holiday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday encourages people to do something generous after spending on the weekend sales.
Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation is one of many organizations seeking support, launching a campaign for 100 hours of giving for 100 years of Southlake that kicked off Nov. 26. Their campaign centres on Roger Fox, a supporter and volunteer for the hospital where he received cancer treatment.
“Giving Tuesday is an opportunity to ‘Care Like Roger,’ and make a donation, which will have meaningful impact at Southlake,” Southlake Foundation president and CEO Jennifer Ritter said in a news release. “Giving Tuesday donations will help put new tools and technology directly into their hands. It’s a holiday wish that we can all support coming true.”
Charities throughout Newmarket are looking for support, including Blue Door, the Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association (NACCA) and BridgeNorth.
Housing charity Blue Door has a matching donation campaign aiming to raise $50,000, running to Nov. to 28.
“It’s in the most challenging of times that we look to our community to lift up people most in need. This is no doubt a time of great challenges and we need your help more than ever,” Blue Door CEO Michael Braithwaite said in a news release. “Your donation will go a long way in helping Blue Door provide the gifts of housing, health, and employment to people most in need, and together we can give hope for a better year ahead.”
NACCA is asking for donations to its scholarship program, which helps students entering post-secondary education.
“I believe the NACCA Scholarship will equip me to be a catalyst for equity, resourcefulness, and hope, inspiring a brighter future for all,” 2023 scholarship award recipient Lola Irelewuyi said on social media.
BridgeNorth, an anti-human trafficking charity, is holding a campaign entitled The Next Mile.
“This holiday season, join us as we reflect on where we've been and look ahead to where we hope to go next,” the charity said on social media. “Together, we can walk The Next Mile with strength, overcoming any obstacle.
Southlake describes the story of Fox for its campaign, with Fox making a great effort to support the hospital that saved his life.
“I give back financially because it’s just another way I can express my gratitude for all the good stuff that Southlake has provided me over the years,” Fox said.
