Grease fire in Aurora leads to partial closure of Yonge Street on Sunday evening

Residents of the building believe the fire started in one of the units, rather than one of the restaurants

A grease fire in an Aurora building on Sunday, July 11 saw the southbound lanes of Yonge Street blocked by emergency vehicles as four fire trucks, two ambulances and several more police and paramedic vehicles responded to the scene.

The incident took place at 14810 Yonge St., Aurora, which is a residential building, as well as a strip plaza with several restaurants.

York Regional Police on the scene confirmed it was a grease fire that was under control by 6:45 p.m. but didn’t say whether it was in one of the restaurants or the residential part.

However, residents of the building, Jacquie Hamilton and Mark Sussmann, said they believe it happened in one of the residential units.

The pair said they had been getting ready to make dinner when the alarm started going off and they quickly evacuated the building.

They also said they saw one tenant being treated by first responders, and another resident, James Ross, said he believes it was for smoke inhalation.

Ross also said that while it appeared to be a big response for the situation, it's an old building and he worries a fire could get out of hand quickly.

As part of that response, a fire hose was attached to a hydrant down the street with police officers directing some vehicles to drive along the sidewalk to exit the parking lot of the building.

Shortly after 7 p.m., firefighters began packing up the hose and residents were given the go-ahead to return to their homes.

Sussman said by that point they had been outside for an hour to an hour and a half.
