The Town of Newmarket has closed part of the Tom Taylor Trail in the wake of thawing snow and rain that has caused some flooding.

Newmarket has temporarily closed a portion of the trail behind Canadian Building Materials to Paul Semple Park. The flooding originated Friday, when the town also closed parts of the trail from Mulock Drive to Paul Semple Park, on Savage Road, and the Mulock Drive underpass.

“Newmarket staff continue to monitor the weather and will reopen the trails when it is safe to do so,” the town said in a news release. “Please take extra caution and stay away from all watercourses.”

The region has experienced warmer weather over the past week leading to a thaw. The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority warned to take caution around watercourses earlier this month given the freeze-thaw cycles.

“Frequent freeze-thaw cycles can create hazardous conditions by increasing runoff and contributing to higher water levels and faster flows in local watercourses,” the authority said.

Flooding is not unheard of on Tom Taylor Trail, with Newmarket having to close parts of it in previous years during winter due to overflowing water.
