Newmarket is closing sections of the Tom Taylor Trail until further notice due to flooding, including at the Keith Davis Bridge.

The Town of Newmarket is closing several Tom Taylor Trail bridge areas due to rainfall and flooding until further notice.

The town said in a Feb. 17 news release that walkways are closing on the trail in several areas: under the Keith Davis Bridge on Davis Drive in both directions, under Mulock Drive, the boardwalk at Fairy Lake from the municipal offices to the main trail, and from Mulock Drive to Paul Semple Park.

Water is overflowing on parts of the trail.

“Please steer clear of the area and stay away from all watercourses,” the municipality said.

Newmarket is under a snowfall warning, with 15 to 25 centimetres of precipitation expected between this afternoon and Friday morning.

The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority also issued a flood outlook Feb. 15, noting possible dangers in low-lying areas.

"While widespread flooding is not expected, the possibility for flooding in various low-lying areas of the watershed exists due to the expected rainfall and melting of the snowpack,” the organization said Feb. 15. “Watercourses will be flowing higher than normal causing local streams and rivers to become dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges. Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses.”

Weather and road conditions also led to local school boards calling an inclement weather day Feb. 17, closing schools.

The town said it would provide more information whenever the closed areas are set to reopen.
