The end of November quickly came and went. It may be hard to believe, but December is here. The season of giving, spreading joy and spending time with loved ones. November was filled with community celebrations, congratulations and recognitions.

I had the honour of attending the Central York Fire Services 2022 Recognition Ceremony at station 4-5 (the brand new station on Earl Stewart) where more than 40 firefighters and staff members were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments and milestones. The firefighters in our community play an important role in helping people in their most vulnerable moments, ensuring the safety of their lives, and providing the care and support they require in their time of need. When you see a firefighter in our community, please, I encourage you to thank them for the service they provide for us all.

It was great to visit the Metro #798 grocery store on Davis Drive in Newmarket, where I was privileged to present a plaque to their store manager for winning Silver in the 2021 Foodland Ontario Awards. This store was one of 60 award winners across the province. Buying local food supports a strong agri-food sector that sustains us, boosts our economy and helps create good jobs across the province.

What an amazing event, the Aurora Sport Hall of Fame 2022 Induction Celebration. Four new members were inducted. Aurora Sport Hall of Fame Induction Celebration Evening is one of our community’s premiere events showcasing those who have been instrumental in raising the profile of sports in Aurora. As I noted in my speech that evening, when I am asked ‘what is Aurora famous for?’, my immediate response is, Aurora is a sport community.

I dropped by Southlake Regional Health Centre, where I was able to meet and present a congratulatory scroll to Brandi Ferenc who received the Women’s Executive Network, top 100 Canada’s Most Powerful Women of the Year Award. As a trailblazing journey person in the refrigeration mechanic industry, I was thrilled to recognize Brandi for her advocacy and leadership in her skilled trades career. So proud of Brandi, as she continues to promote diversity in the skilled trades profession.

As you are likely aware, the province is pleased to announce that the Crown, the Canadian union of Public Employees (CUPE), and the school board trustee associations, have reached a tentative agreement that keeps schools open so that kids can stay in class. Throughout these negotiations, our government’s focus has always been keeping students in the classroom without disruption. This agreement is welcomed news to all students, parents, and workers alike, who now have the certainty they have been looking for.

This is not a win for governments or education unions, it is a win for Ontario families who finally have peace of mind knowing their children will remain in the classroom. After two and a half years of unprecedented disruptions, nothing matters more than stability in our schools.

As we get into the winter months, it is important to remember our winter driving tip – “see snow? Drive slow.” Do your part and ensure that your vehicle is winter ready before hitting the roads this holiday season. Stay safe.
