Cycle Newmarket taking 'slow roll' for cycling safety

The 4 km. group ride will take place on June 11, beginning at 1 p.m. at Riverwalk Commons

Cycle Newmarket is inviting you to take a Slow Roll for Safe Streets on Saturday, June 11.

The local group is hosting the community ride to demonstrate that "cyclists are legal, legitimate, and vulnerable road users who deserve respect and safe infrastructure," according to organizers.

The ride begins at 1 p.m. at Riverwalk Commons in downtown Newmarket.

If there is rain in the forecast, you will be alerted by email by 9 a.m. June 11 regarding cancellation.

The ride will take place on the street, as a group, at a slow speed of 10 to 15 km/h for about 4 kilometres.

As most of the roads on the route do not have bike lanes, participants will cycle in the full curbside lanes except when making space for passing vehicles.

If you want to review the rules for safe cycling, organizers encourage you to look at the Ontario cycling handbook.

The route map is above, with the starting point marked with an X. Meet at the south side of Riverwalk Commons, Timothy Street and Doug Duncan Drive immediately following the Newmarket Farmers Market.
