Culture Days offer free, hands-on family fun

Spoken word poetry at Old Town Hall, 3D print your own guitar pick at Newmarket Public Library, history hunt at Elman W. Campbell Museum, and more await arts and culture fans

If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at spoken word poetry, drum in a drumming circle, or learn to play a musical instrument, this Saturday’s Culture Days event is for you.

Culture Days is a celebration of arts and culture and features free, hands-on activities in towns and cities across the country. The Town of Newmarket presents three separate events all happening between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29.

Old Town Hall (460 Botsford St.)

Drop in and take part in a variety of activities throughout the day. There are workshops and demonstrations on spoken word, blackout poetry, open mic, and adding beat to prose. You can also get some hands-on practice at drumming in a drumming circle. While you’re there, contribute your ideas to the interactive iWonder art installation in the atrium.

Newmarket Public Library (438 Park Ave.)

Join Arduino and Raspberry Pi Beat Boxes if you want to learn to play a new musical instrument with the help of a music expert. You can also create your own music with Makey Makey technology, 3D print your own guitar pick and join in for a session of interactive karaoke.

Elman W. Campbell Museum (134 Main St.)

If history is more your thing, now’s your chance to see the current exhibit, Warmth Through the Generations, which features quilts made by Campbell’s mother and grandmother such as a Quilt of Valour, Dresden Plate, Colonial Lady, Double Wedding Ring, Underground Railroad, and more. You can participate in a history hunt throughout the facility and learn more along the way about the artifacts that are in your community museum.
