A bird strike is to blame for the power outage that affected 1,400 customers in Newmarket last week.

Crews determined that the cause of the hours-long unplanned outage on Friday, March 31 was animal contact, which damaged an overhead transformer switch.

Newmarket-Tay Power said the affected transformer switch was in the area of George Street, which is near Yonge Street and Davis Drive. Residents in that area and on streets including Septonne Avenue, Main Street North, Longford Drive and Walter Avenue all reported being without power.

The outage was reported at about 2 p.m. and gradually power was restored. It wasn't until 6:12 p.m. that all power had been restored.

NT Power said due to the nature of the incident, with a bird flying into equipment, an outage could not have been prevented.
