Re: Pedestrian injured when struck by cyclist on Newmarket trail, July 28, 2023.

The poll following the article is badly flawed — it is clearly biased against cycling.

We want to vote for better education for walkers and joggers. In all our years of walking, jogging and cycling on the trail system, by far the most issues we have had have been with pedestrians.

The Tom Taylor Trail is a major part of Newmarket's active transportation network. In fact, until recently, it was the only north-south route through town, and was cited by council as a reason not to provide on-street cycle routes.

The town could improve markings on the trails, especially leading in to blind corners, for pedestrians and for cyclists.

And let's be honest here, cyclists have far fewer options for safe travel than pedestrians. There are hundreds of kilometres of sidewalks in Newmarket, but barely two dozen kilometres of on-street cycle lanes.
