Area paralegal Brian Morris is no stranger to good deeds.

From annual fundraisers for Newmarket’s seasonal homeless shelter, Inn from the Cold, to pro-bono legal representation for those who are vulnerable, Morris doesn’t hesitate to step up.

Now, in response to the critical shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) that has come to light as health-care workers assess and treat patients with COVID-19 on the frontline, he is reaching out to the community to help raise $20,000 through a GoFundMe campaign, Protect our Nurses at Southlake Hospital

So far, 11 donors have contributed $990 toward the goal that will allow for the purchase of KN95 and N95 masks, which cost .39 cents and between $1.40 to $1.80 apiece, respectively.

“As someone who is married to a frontline worker, I am concerned about the current COVID-19 pandemic,” said Morris, whose wife is a nurse. “I am grateful for the dedication and support they continue to provide for all of us. The time is now for us to help them back.”

Southlake Regional Health Centre is running low on masks, gowns, and gloves for its health-care workers.

“(The equipment) is crucial to ensure their safety and ability to continue working and helping us fight COVID-19,” said Morris, who owns Lighthouse Legal Services.

“As we continue to operate, we are committed to supporting the community in these uncertain times, and have started reaching out to our community partners and friends to help supply PPE to Southlake,” he said.

Funds raised will go directly toward purchasing these key items. Lighthouse’s Morris will cover the cost of shipping these items to the Newmarket hospital.
