York Region marks lowest daily increase yet in COVID-19 cases

Only four new COVID-19 cases today in York Region are marking the lowest daily increase in cases since the pandemic took hold in mid-February.  

However, four more deaths are bringing the region's COVID-19 fatalities to 139 of its 1,909 cases as of today, May 12.

A third Georgina resident of River Glen Nursing Home in Sutton has died, a 94-year-old woman, on Sunday, May 10 after testing positive April 29.

A 99-year-old Vaughan woman passed away Sunday, May 10 at Mackenzie Health Hospital. She is the first resident of Richview Manor in Maple to die, where 13 residents and 14 health-care workers have tested positive.

A sixth resident of Kristus Darzs Latvian Home in Vaughan has died, a 94-year-old man on Tuesday, May 12 after testing positive April 19.

A 70-year-old woman died Friday, May 8 at Mackenzie Health of a close contact acquired test confirmed March 31.

Outbreaks are active at 33 facilities, including at Kerry's Place Autism Services on Doane Road in East Gwillimbury, and 18 have been declared over, including at Chartwell Valley Vista Retirement Residence in Vaughan today.

 

In total, 878 residents, patients and health-care workers (not all of whom live in York Region) have been infected by the virus as a result of an outbreak at one of 51 facilities.

 

In Newmarket, institutional outbreaks have caused 145 cases and 12 of its 15 COVID-19 related deaths. A Newmarket man, 57, was the first individual to die of workplace outbreak acquired case.

 

Outbreaks are active at five facilities in Newmarket, including at Southlake Regional Health Centre — the only hospital in York Region with an outbreak —with four patients and four health-care workers infected.

 

An additional resident has been confirmed with COVID-19 at Mackenzie Place, one of the most severe outbreaks in long-term care homes in the region with 80 residents and 24 health-care workers testing positive.

There are 247 York Region health-care worker cases, with more than half resolved.

Resolved cases in the region are at 920, or 48 per cent. In Newmarket, 24 per cent of cases are resolved.

The number of hospitalized patients in York Region is 83, with 20 cases critically ill in ICU. In Newmarket, nine residents are hospitalized, with none in ICU.

Of 1,909 cases (+4 today) in York Region:

  • 773 are confirmed in Vaughan (+ 3 today), 52 deaths, 452 resolved;
  • 418 in Markham (+ 4), 44 deaths, 196 resolved;
  • 205 in Richmond Hill (+ 3), 8 deaths, 128 resolved;
  • 184 in Newmarket (- 1 today), 15 deaths, 45 resolved; 
  • 92 in Aurora, 13 deaths, 36 resolved;
  • 82 in Georgina (+ 1), 4 deaths, 8 resolved;
  • 44 in East Gwillimbury; 1 death; 10 resolved;
  • 43 in Whitchurch-Stouffville, 24 resolved;
  • 23 in King (+ 1), 2 deaths, 18 resolved.

As of 4 p.m. May 12, Southlake Regional Health Centre has five COVID-19 patients, three on ventilators, in ICU. Seventeen COVID-19 patients are in inpatient units. The number of inpatients under investigation for COVID-19 is 24. Total deaths have increased by to 13.
