A 93-year-old woman is Newmarket's 36th COVID-19 related death of the pandemic and the tenth patient to die after acquiring the virus at Southlake Regional Health Centre.

The woman, who passed away at the hospital on Saturday, Jan. 30, is among the growing death toll linked to outbreaks on six units at the Newmarket hospital since the pandemic began.

A positive test on Jan. 26, the same day as the onset of symptoms, had confirmed the virus in the patient.

The most recent outbreak, which began Jan. 21 and lasted for 10 days, has been declared closed, York Region Public Health is reporting today. One patient and two health-care workers were exposed to the virus on a hospital unit.

A total of 34 patients and 50 health-care workers have acquired COVID-19 in outbreaks that remain active on four hospital units as of Feb. 1.

The largest outbreak, in which 11 patients and 24 health-care workers are confirmed with COVID-19, was the first of the second wave of the pandemic to be declared on Dec. 21.

As of today, a total of 69 patients have died with COVID-19 at the hospital, according to Southlake's website.
