A 93-year-old man is Newmarket's 35th COVID-19 related death and among the growing death toll linked to outbreaks at Southlake Regional Health Centre.

The man, who passed away Jan. 25, is the ninth patient to die after being exposed to COVID-19 at one of six outbreaks at the Newmarket hospital during the pandemic.

He was asymptomatic, however, a test confirmed the virus Jan. 13, according to York Region spokesperson Patrick Casey.

York Region Public Health reported another eight COVID-19 deaths on Jan. 29, now totalling 458, and including an 87-year-old Aurora woman who also passed away Jan. 25 at Southlake after being exposed to the virus at the hospital.

She, too, had been asymptomatic, however, a test confirmed the virus Jan. 21, Casey said.

Also this week, on Jan. 28, the public health unit reported the death of an 87-year-old Georgina woman who passed away Friday, Jan. 15 with COVID-19 acquired at Southlake.

The positive case was confirmed Dec. 21, the day following symptom onset, and the first day that the hospital's second outbreak of the pandemic was declared.

As of Jan. 29, a total of 35 patients and 52 health-care workers have acquired COVID-19 at current outbreaks at Southlake, said Southlake spokesperson Kathryn Perrier.

The first outbreak lasted 16 days, from April 29 to May 15, and resulted in the death of three patients. Five outbreaks are currently active on separate units, the first of which was declared Dec. 21 and the most recent was declared nine days ago, according to the public health unit.

"Our condolences go out to anyone who has lost a loved one to COVID-19," said Perrier.

Perrier said the outbreak of COVID-19 that was declared Dec. 26 at Southlake's Restorative Care Unit on Church Streeet in Toronto has been declared over by Toronto Public Health as of today.

As of Jan. 29, 67 patients have died with COVID-19 at the Newmarket hospital, according to Southlake's website.
