An 86-year-old man is the 34th Newmarket resident to die with COVID-19.
The man passed away Saturday, Jan. 16 at Southlake Regional Health Centre after acquiring the case in at outbreak at Humber River Hospital in Toronto, according to York Region spokesperson Patrick Casey.
A positive test confirmed the case on Jan. 5, the day following symptom onset.
The majority of Newmarket's COVID-19 fatalities, at 25 (74 per cent), are a result of cases acquired in institutional outbreaks, and all but three are residents aged 65 and older. As well, the majority of cases, at 74 per cent, are males.
Four deaths are as a result of close contact cases, four deaths are cases acquired through community transmission, and one case was acquired in a workplace outbreak.
York Region is reporting a total of seven more COVID-19 related fatalities today, with the steadily mounting death toll now at 450.
An 87-year-old Georgina woman passed away Friday, Jan. 15 at Southlake Regional Health Centre with a case acquired in an outbreak at Southlake. The positive case was confirmed Dec. 21, the day following symptom onset.
A 69-year-old Markham man passed away Sunday, Jan. 17, also at Southlake, with a case acquired by community transmission. The positive test results were on Dec. 25, following symptom onset Dec. 13, Casey said.
A 90-year-old King woman passed away Wednesday, Jan. 27 at Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville with a close contact case. Positive results were confirmed Jan. 20, after symptom onset Jan. 7.
