In an announcement made this morning at Central York Fire Station 4-5 in Aurora, the Ontario Government has taken a significant step forward to honour the sacrifices by first responders and public safety personnel.

The Ontario government is investing $3.18 million in a groundbreaking initiative—the Ontario Immediate Family Wellness Program. This program aims to provide compassionate assistance to the families of fallen heroes: police officers, firefighters, paramedics, ambulance communications officers, and provincial correctional services employees.

"I am deeply moved by the Ontario government’s support to address the mental health challenges that affect the families of our fallen public safety heroes. This funding represents a pledge to the journey of healing and well-being of the families that have already sacrificed so much. This support acknowledges the unique burdens our families bear and underscores our collective commitment to their well-being as they navigate this difficult journey. Together, we’re providing unwavering support and commitment that will echo through our organizations for future generations of first responders,” said Rocco Volpe, Acting Fire Chief, Central York Dir Services.

The program is centred around its commitment to mental health. Families who experience the loss of a loved one, who died on duty or by suicide, will have access to critical support for up to two years.

Here’s how it works:

  • 24/7 Crisis and Care Planning: A team of professionals ready, day and night, to provide immediate crisis intervention.
  • Quick Access to Counselling: The program ensures that families can access counselling services. Whether by phone or online, compassionate professionals can guide them.
  • Proactive Care: Regardless of location or specific needs, the program extends proactive care.
