York Regional Police are getting chill again for its annual polar plunge in support of Special Olympics athletes March 7.

The plunge, which is open to public participants, is part of York Regional Police’s efforts to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics Ontario, in partnership with the York Regional Police Association.

The plunge takes place at the York Regional Police Association building, 63 Eric T. Smith Way, in Aurora on Thursday, March 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. with registration at 6 p.m.

All are welcome to plunge, support the participants, or just cheer them on, said a news release for the event. This year’s polar plunge will have a St. Patrick’s Day theme and those in a attendance are encouraged to wear green.

York Regional Police is a longtime supporter of Special Olympics Ontario, having hosted two Games, in 2000 and 2013.

“Many of our annual fundraising events support Special Olympics Ontario and its athletes,” said the force.

For the last 53 years, Special Olympics has grown from an initiative serving local athletes to becoming the world’s largest movement dedicated to promoting respect, acceptance, inclusion and human dignity for people with intellectual disabilities through sports, said the news release.

“Support from the community is crucial in keeping Special Olympics Ontario running smoothly,” said the news release.
