York Region man charged in connection to fatal collision on Highway 400

Michael Okoake, 31, was arrested on June 21 and charged in connection to a collision on Highway 400 that resulted in the death of a 73-year-old.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are charging a York Region man in connection to a collision that resulted in one fatality in 2022.

On Friday, Sept. 30, 2022 at approximately 3 a.m., the OPP were called to a collision on Highway 400 southbound south of Bass Pro Mills Drive in Vaughan.

According to police, a red Volkswagen Jetta was observed to be travelling at a high rate of speed prior to colliding with a minivan. The collision resulted in three people from the minivan suffering minor injuries and a fourth person, a 73-year-old from North York, suffering fatal injuries. 

Witnesses reported that the driver of the red Volkswagen walked away from the collision scene, police said. The driver of the Volkswagen was identified as Michael Okoake, 31, from Richmond Hill. A warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest on Oct. 5, 2022.

Police located Okoake June 21 and took him into custody, where he remains pending a bail hearing.

Police say he’s being charged with dangerous operation causing death, failure to stop at accident resulting in death, dangerous operation causing bodily harm, failure to stop at accident resulting in bodily harm, failure to comply with release order, public mischief, and possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking.
